Atherfeild Event Report

Drivers were greeted to near perfect conditions on Sunday 22nd of June for the fifth round of the Isle of Wight Car Club Championship, and the second unsealed surface event, held at Atherfield Farm. The Farm played host to an open, varied and technical layout which included several hairpins.

K Richardson in his C1 Skoda

The early runs were plagued by ‘wrong tests’, with many of the drivers knocking over cones or not taking the correct route on their first attempt. Steve Brett looked to be in the groove immediately, setting a 67 second time in his Mini, which put him on top of the time sheets after the first run. On his second run, Brett improved once more, setting a time of 64.46 seconds. However, it was not long before the four-wheel drive contenders inevitably took control on the off-road layout, with James Robbins achieving a 62.87 in his Subaru.

However, on his third run, Steve Brett was on the ragged edge, pushing to get every last tenth out of his little blue Mini. However, it was soon evident that he was pushing slightly too hard, as he tipped his car going through one of the hairpins, coming to a halt upside down. Marshals and fellow drivers ran over to help, and soon righted the car. Steve was unharmed, and assisted in pushing his Mini back to the paddock.

James Robbins improved once again on his third run, setting a time of 61.86 seconds. Toby Allen also looked promising in his Subaru, setting a time which could have taken the lead. Unfortunately, he over pushed, and missed the ‘stop box’ area at the finish line, meaning that he would be penalised and lose the time. On the fourth run, Toby set a time of 60.58, and this time it would go without penalty. Matthew Price, who was sharing the Car with Toby, set a time of 61.33, which would then be beaten by just one hundredth of a second, courtesy of James Robbins.

Matthew improved once more on his fifth run, setting a time of 60.50, which put him to the top of the timing sheets. Toby had set yet another quick time, but caught another penalty as he sent a cone flying during the run. However, it would all come together on the sixth run, with a time of 60.47, which was just enough to secure victory overall and in Class Four. Matthew Price remained second, while Ryan Munt moved up to third on his last run, at the expense of James Robbins, with whom he was sharing the Group N Impreza. Dan Morgan was fifth in his VW Golf, while Steve Brett, who made it back out onto the course and proceeded to drive even quicker, took sixth overall in the Mini, as well as Class Three honours.

The ever-sideways Dean Long took Class Two honours in his Mazda MX5, while Steve Glass took the Class One win in his Fiat Siecento.

The sixth round of the championship will be held on the 13th of July at BAE, while preparations are well underway for the IOWCC Motorsport Festival, which will be held on the 30th and 31st of August at the County Show Ground in aid of Kissypuppy.

Round 4 Event Report

Round four of the IOWCC Auto-Test championship saw us at St George’s football club and as has been the way when we have been on tarmac, the heavens opened and open they did. With drivers not only wringing out performance from there chosen vehicle they where wringing out their overalls and the first runs of the day saw the iconic Mini of Dave Goodwin being chased hard by the shear power of Russell Hectors Impreza.

However with the track now being bathed by sunshine and drying fast the rest of the field came chasing hard and Dan Morgan started to assert his dominance on run two, however bragging rights where withheld from this run as both Dan and Kevin Richardson both managing to set identical times to the hundredth of a second!

By the third runs Dan was home and dry and managed to set a time some two second ahead of his closest rival. But the rest of the field where trading tenths of a second with second and third places constantly changing hands with some seven people vying for the podium.

Run four the drivers were starting to attack hard with the whole field of 23 drivers being covered by 8.2 seconds which included Dan’s lead of 1.3 seconds. Which meant that it was anyone’s guess as to who would be accompanying Dan on the podium?

Run Five saw all the drivers trying to find some big gains which meant that risks where being taken and some ten drivers either accrued penalties or failed the test and even the leader managed not to finish, was the pressure of an eroding lead getting to Dan??

Of course not, normal service was resumed on run six with Dan Morgan being the only driver to break into the sub 40 second bracket setting a time of 39:73 and taking the overall win. So the only question to answer now is who will be the best of the rest? With the Mini drivers looking set to mop up along comes Toby Allen, whom most of the day had been arguing with the foot of the table, to steal second place by posting a time some five seconds faster than his previous time. Third place went to Kevin Richardson.

The next event is Sunday 22nd at Atherfield Farm (PO38 2LG) from 10 am, For more info see IOWCC.CO.UK

IOWCC Round Three – Knighton Sandpit

After two rounds of competition on tarmac for the Isle of Wight Car Club, it was time to head off road at the Knighton Sandpit for the first unsealed surface event of the year. In a stark contrast to the first two rounds, the weather was sunny and hot, with only the slightest breeze troubling the drivers.

The course itself was an interesting mix of flowing sections, sand and tight corners.

In the early runs, it seemed that the drivers were driving with a hint of caution, clearing the track and re-adjusting to the world of off-road driving after the tarmac rounds beforehand. The Subaru Imprezas seemed to have the early edge, with the likes of Toby Allen and James Robbins setting the pace during the initial attempts.

The track got quicker as the day went on despite ruts developing at the back of the course. This made the back section of the course a problem for the drivers, since it was much easier to lose time instead of gain time.

Toby Allen was consistently fast throughout the day, and when the time sheets were printed at the end of the day, it was him on top overall, as well as class four, in the Subaru Impreza. He did not go unchallenged however, with the top five drivers all within two and a half seconds of him. This included Ryan Munt, Dan Morgan (The only person to drive anything other than a Subaru in the top six) and James Robbins, who made up the rest of the top four. Dean Long was on top in Class Two, using his flamboyant style to full effect in his Mazda MX5.

Class Three honours went to Mini driver Steve Brett, while Steve Glass triumphed in Class One.

Next up in the IOWCC heads to Newport Football Club on the 7th of June. For more details head over to iowcc.co.uk

Round 2 Write up

Round 2: Isle of Wight Pearl

The Isle of Wight Pearl became the home of an extremely tight course on Easter Sunday for the second round of the Isle of Wight Car Club Championship. The layout was a lot slower than the one used at the previous round, but it looked as if it would produce a close event alongside the torrid weather conditions of the day. Many were hoping for a repeat of the weather they had experienced two weeks prior to this event, with the rain fading and the track drying as the day went on. However, there was to be no repeat of that, with the rain falling relentlessly through the day.

Despite the weather issues, the times got faster as the day went on. David Goodwin (Mini MKI) was on top of the timing sheets in the early stages, and his time wasn’t beaten until the third set of runs; Danny Grist and Daniel Kozakewycz, both behind the wheel of a Mazda MX5, improved on his time, with Daniel becoming the first driver to break into the 37 second range with a time of 0:37:58. During the fourth set of runs, Dean Long, in yet another MX5, posted a time of 0:37.22, which propelled him to the top of the timesheets. James Robbins (Peugeot 205) and Russel Hector (Subaru Impreza) also set times of under 38 seconds, meaning things were becoming increasingly close at the top.

On his fifth run, Dean Long set a time of 0:36.54, which would prove to be unbeatable. In fact, he was the first and only driver to set a time of less than 37 seconds all day. Danny Grist also improved, setting a 0:37.15, which would be the best time of the day for the Class Four entrant. Incredibly, Daniel Kozakewycz set an almost identical time on his final run, falling milliseconds short of taking second away from Grist. Kevin Richardson also came close in his Mini, setting a time that was less than a tenth off Kozakewycz and Grist.

So after an extremely soggy day of motorsport, Dean Long was not only victorious in Class Two, but also stood on top of the overall podium in his Mazda MX5. Danny Grist and Daniel Kozakewycz rounded out an all MX5 overall podium, with Grist also claiming victory in Class Four.

Class Three honours went the way of Kevin Richardson in his Mini, while Ricky Sheppard set the pace in Class Five. Darren Cole drove his Seat Ibiza to another Class One victory, cementing himself as a frontrunner for the championship in that particular class.

Round 2 Sunday 20th April – IOW Pearl Military Road

A rare occasion presents itself to us this coming Sunday the 20th! We are being given the opportunity to run at a brand new SS venue; IOW pearl car park.

As with all of our venues making best use of space is imperative to the success of the event. Fortunately we have managed to secure additional parking on Chilton Farm Lane, (30 yards west of the entrance to IOW Pearl on the opposite side of the road.) Any non-competing car will be asked to park here.

Anyone bringing a non-road legal car to the event will need to drive into the pearl car park to unload before parking their trailer and tow car over on the lane. It should go without saying that if the car is not road legal it cannot be driven across the public highway between the competition and parking areas! Please when parking on the side of the lane, ensure you are not blocking access to any of the gates or impeding access down the lane.

The event will run like we do at St Georges Park, with doors to the car park closing at 9:25 so if you have anyone coming to watch please can you ask them to park on Chilton farm lane or the parking area immediately after the entrance to the pearl on the same side of the road.

Scruitineering at events.

As you know we scrutineer every car before an event, this is something we feel very passionate about having found and then mitigated many potential hazards over the years!

It is starting to take up to 2 hours at some events, partly due to drivers leaving their cars locked or on trailers un accessible to be checked. Please can you ensure that you leave your car open and unloaded ready to be checked by 9:30 so our scruitineer (and time keepers) can have completed this activity before the safety briefing.

Finally as ever please remember you can subscribe as a 2014 member and sign on for the event online through the website!

Isle of Wight Car Club 2014: Round One Event Report

After a long wait for the ladies and gents of the Isle of Wight Car Club, the 2014 season finally got underway with the first round of the season, which received an entry of 32 drivers. A relatively free flowing course at the Isle of Wight College played host to the event, which initially looked more like a duck race rather than a motorsports event. The heavens had opened overnight, and they were threatening to do so once again as everyone made their way onto track for their opening runs. However, the drivers did a good job of staying on the track in the adverse weather conditions, and they were rewarded with a course that dried throughout the day.

The compact nature of the original Mini lends itself to this type of event no matter what weather conditions they are faced with, so it was unsurprising to see several of those at the front. For a while, it looked as if the father-son pairing of Chris and Adam Greenen were untouchable out front, with the two exchanging fastest times in their shared Mini. Their dominance was then interrupted by Dan Morgan in his borrowed Caterham, who set a stunning time of 1:03.24 on his fifth run. At that point, only Chris Greenen had got into the 1:03 range with a 1:03.55.

Sure enough, Dan went out on his sixth and last run and set another fastest time, a 1:02.97, which looked to be enough to secure overall victory. Kevin Richardson took to the course next. Kevin had been struggling to find pace to match the Greenens in his Mini, and after five runs he had been unable to break the mid-1:05 barrier. However, his sixth run was almost perfect, and he crossed the line to claim a 1:02.68, putting him on top.

Next it was the turn of Chris Greenen in the Mini which had shown such great pace throughout the event. His fastest time of the day so far was a 1:03.55; he would be looking to beat that and reclaim the lead in his last run of the day. As he set off, it was clear that he was on maximum attack. His lines were neat and he avoided any cone contact, and he crossed the line to set a 1:02.23. That time would not be beaten, so Chris had secured the overall win as well as Class Three victory on his final run.

Class Five honours went the way of Dan Morgan in the Caterham, while Subaru Impreza campaigner David Bizzill came out on top in Class Four. Daniel Kozakewycz was the first Class Two runner in his Mazda MX5, while Darren Cole set the pace in Class One driving his Seat Ibiza.

The next round of the championship sees the Isle of Wight Car Club travelling along the Military Road to the Isle of Wight Pearl on the 20th of April.
